Malaysia’s Sime Darby to invest 34 mln euros to build new plants in Europe
April 02, 2008: 07:02 AM ESTKUALA LUMPUR, Apr. 2, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) — Malaysia’s top oil palm grower Sime Darby Bhd. said Wednesday it plans to invest over 34 million euros ($22 million) for new palm oil processing facilities in Europe as it seeks to expand its oils and fats downstream operations.
The world’s largest palm oil producer said it has identified various locations for palm oil processing facilities, including setting up a new refinery and bulking facilities which will complement the operations of its subsidiary, Unimills.
‘We are encouraged by the positive uptake and see an opportunity for Unimills to conduct further research to develop a more comprehensive range of such high-value niche products,’ said Ahmad Zubir Murshid, chief executive of Sime Darby.
At Unimills, the investment involves the installation of a new 10,000-tonne capacity tank yard, an innovation center with a new laboratory and pilot plant facilities, and an enzymatic arrangement plant with a capacity of 100,000 metric tonnes per year, the company said in a statement.
Based in Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands, Unimills produces tailor-made vegetable fats for industrial use. Its major customers include Swiss food giant Nestle S.A.and Anglo-Dutch food and household goods maker Unilever. (NYSE:UL)
